Best conversation ever on TV Tropes, is about Disney Castle in the Opening Credits

  • What bugs me is, why would anybody build a castle over a river flowing straight through the main gate?
  • It's not the main gate. The road comes in from another side. And wouldn't you want a fresh source of water if you were under siege?
  • Who would want to lay siege to Disney Castle?
  • Disney villains, most likely.
  • Warner Brothers?

What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.

How Cartoon Network Became A Haven For Some Of The Best Independent Comic Book Creators Working Today
By Shannon O’Leary
“…what is new—and news—about Adventure Time and other Cartoon Network shows, such as Super Jail andSecret Mountain Fort Awesome, is how heavily influenced they are by aesthetics initially established by independent comics artists. And Ward, along with fellow Cartoon Network show creators JG Quintel (Regular Show) and Ben Jones (The Problem Solverz), have not only demonstrated their own distinctive styles as show runners but also their strengths as curators by rounding up show crews chock full of impressive cartoonists that any comics editor would be proud to name check.
“Ward’s approach to the production of the Adventure Time licensed comic is, in many ways, characteristic of Cartoon Network’s approach to some of its most critically acclaimed and highest rated shows. “Pen’s been really open to our getting creative with the comic, which is a rare thing in licensed comics,” notes Boom! lead Adventure Time editor Shannon Watters. ‘This has allowed us to take the project to interesting places that we’ve never really been able to go with any of our other licensed books.’”

Well, as it’s Mothers’ Day, I’m taking Mom out to dinner and a movie this afternoon/evening. She wants to see The Avengers again (now you know where I get it!) and there are some pretty nice places to eat around here, so we have options.

I can’t help but notice the title of the original post. If painting large numbers of people with a wide brush is supposed to be unacceptable, then why is it okay to do so to certain groups and not to others? If racism is a bad thing (and don’t get me wrong, it is), then racism against white people should be treated with the same contempt as racism against any other group.

What was the longest car ride you’ve ever taken?

In one sitting or over the course of a road trip? I have reasonably clear memories of sitting in a car for up to twelve or thirteen hours (with intermittent breaks).

Ask me anything
